About Leipzig, Germany
"I am going to Leipzig, to a place where one can see the whole world on small scale." (Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, German poet)
Welcome to one of the most beautiful, liveliest and fastest growing cities in Germany. With a history going back almost 1,000 years, Leipzig has earned more than a few claims to fame – as a city of music and arts, of commerce (DHL, Porsche, BMW), of sports, as Little Paris and the Venice of the North. Bach, Goethe, Heisenberg, Nietzsche, Wagner, von Puttkamer – the list of significant personalities who lived or worked in Leipzig is long.
History: As a trade fair city, book city, industrial metropolis, and the site of the Peaceful Revolution, Leipzig's contributions to world history were manifold. Here, in October 1813, in the glorious “Battle of the Nations”, Austrians, Prussians, Russians and Swedes fought against Napoleon’s army outside the city gates of Leipzig. Involving 500,000 soldiers, it was the biggest battle ever in world history. Today the Monument of the Battle of Nations is the tallest accessible memorial in Europe.
Sights: With over 15,600 cultural monuments, Leipzig is Germany's capital of monuments. The flair of the Leipzig city center is due to the special features of its urban architecture. There is no other European city with a comparably compact inner-city system of arcades and passageways. Old trading palaces and courtyards from the Renaissance, Baroque, Art Nouveau and Historicism blend harmoniously with modern buildings of the 20th/21st century. The most famous and probably the most glamorous arcade is Mädler Passage, whose history is connected with the popular restaurant Auerbachs Keller.
Music: Bach, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Wagner, Grieg, St. Thomas Choir, Leipzig Opera, Gewandhaus Orchestra – these names represent Leipzig's musical past and present. Besides Paris and Vienna, Leipzig is still considered to be the most important city of music today in Europe.
Sports and Leisure: Leipzig and sports belong together! In the year 1903, the soccer club VfB Leipzig was the first German soccer champion in 1907. Today, the Leipzig soccer club RB Leipzig regularly plays in the Champions League and finished the current season as German vice champion.
Leipzigs green core, the Auenwald, a wide strip of floodplain forest running all the way through the city, is unique in Europe. On a boat trip along the canals or rivers visitors will discover the green lung of Leipzig. Another green part of the city is the zoo. It is the most modern one in Europe and its latest project is the giant tropical hall called “Gondwanaland”, which opened in 2011. In the south of Leipzig, the former lignite mining area has been turned into the “New Lakeland Area” with ideal conditions for swimming, water sports and attractive sandy beaches.
Nightlife: Leipzig's nights are long! A night owl in Leipzig will always find an opportunity to turn night into day. Whether it is fine dining or a pub crawl – here visitors will find a selection to suit their taste. Perfect for warm summer nights: Most of the over 1,400 Leipzig restaurants and cafés have outdoor seating.
